After serving in the army, I settled into a company that was engaged in providing customers with an Internet connection. Initially, I was a technical support specialist, but two months later I was appointed the head of one of the technical support departments. One day my boss came to me and said that I had been selected for corporate training under the Managers Program. This is a mandatory six-day course that teaches the basics of management and leadership in the company. For his passage, I had to go out of town and spend five nights away from home.
I enthusiastically accepted the offer: after this training I was promised a raise to the head of the department of eight people and an increase to the salary of 20%. I thought that in the new position I could finally show myself not only in terms of technical skills, but also in management and team spirit (in the army, I received the necessary skills). I really wanted to also go to Europe – it was my old dream – and an increase in wages just opened up this opportunity for me.However, two weeks before the start of the course, I learned that my girlfriend, whom I had met at that time for two years, had scheduled a serious operation and just on the date that I was supposed to be on training. This operation involved painful procedures and a long recovery. Her family was going to visit the girl, but I also wanted to be with her in this difficult period of her life.
On the opposite side of the scale was the possibility of career growth. I waited for him long enough for the situation to turn into a real dilemma for me. Then I decided that before I make the final decision, I will try to avoid unnecessary victims and settle everything.First, I made sure that the day of operation can not be transferred in any way.
Then I went to the head and explained the situation. He told me that the next such training will take place only next year, but promised to discuss with colleagues the possibility of my promotion without training.Unfortunately, the proposal was not approved. Moreover, it turned out that the company made great efforts to pay for my expensive training. The company executives expected me to do everything possible to participate in the planned event.I began to consult with close friends, family, with a girl. All as one advised me to pass this training, but a week before departure, I still took another decision – I remain.
The boss said that for family reasons I can not participate in the Managers of Training. Very soon he resigned himself to my decision and promised to talk about my education next year.I was with my girlfriend during her hospitalization and the next two weeks. Fortunately, everything went well, and I am sure that my presence also contributed to this.I must say that I was not the first time to refuse the promotion. In the army, I declined several offers to study for an officer with the subsequent receipt of a higher rank.
But this time I felt very comfortable and confident. I am proud of my decision, because I put a loved one above my personal gain. In the end, I’m working in “support”, which means I acted according to the spirit of my profession.
