As someone who enjoys assessing humanbehavior, I intend to be a global management consultant who can positivelyinfluence others, and a good role model in my family. I always believe byreflecting my thoughts, it helps me to assess and understand a situation better.
However, leadership had never strike my mind as I have always assumed thatleaders are born with certain traits and charisma, which I do not possess. Vision and charisma are the major leadership-related traits (Birk, 2010). However, personality and emotionalintelligence (EI) are also significant aspects of leadership.
(Stogdill, 1974).Although I may not be a charismatic personnel, I can learn to master my focus andattention to be in command regardless of the setting. According to Goleman(2013), focusing constructively on both self and others enables leaders to developthe key components of EI and focus can be strengthened as it is not a talentbut a willingness to exercise. Skills wise, I have to becontinuously developing my conceptual, problem-solving, social-judgement andknowledges as it is important to keep myself up-to-date in the quickly-changingenvironment nowadays. My weakest skill is always my interpersonal skills. Stronginterpersonal skills can help to build strong relationships and respects in allsettings. Thus, it remains to be my top-prioritized improvement to focus on.
As a good listener, Ialways think that everyone has their own point-of-view and strengths. I am alwaystaking others’ opinions into account. However, my existence has eventuallybecome oblivious and my words appear to be unimportant many times as I wastaken for granted. I have always believed in flexibility as I assume that weare aware that we are responsible for our own actions. In this case, I wouldsay that I have been applying delegating leadership style in all thecircumstances.
I have to learn toapply situationalleadership which is comprised of both directive and supportive aspects toovercome the weaknesses of my current leadership style. I need to firstdetermine what is necessary in the situation by evaluating the situation andassessing the party involved before deciding which leadership style to use. Thereis no one style that will fit everyone in all settings.
Thus, it is veryimportant to be aware of the change of environment, settings, and thecompetencies of parties involved. Effective leadershipcannot be built overnight. It takes perseverance and daily practice. The sameapplies to love, and health. A day of continuous 8-hours work-out does notbuild a healthy body, but1-hour work-out every day does. Love cannot be proven bysaying 1,000 times of “I love you” in one-shot but it takes continuous patienceand effort. Likewise, an intensive 8-hours leadership training does not make mea good leader but continuous reflections and improvements do.
In conclusion, I intend to be a respectful influencer inboth business and non-business settings. In my opinion, an influencer is a transformational leader who generate change while motivatingand nurturing the followers. I want to be a respectable leader whose personalpower is given by my followers due to their trust in me to bring value. Leadership is a combination of theapplication of appropriate personalities, behaviors, and capabilities. Everyonehas a certain individual leadership potential, and it is important to determineand maximize that potential (Northouse, 2004).
