Dishabituation is restoring strength to a system that has been weakened by habituation. This is done using a strong response of a different type. This is done through the process that I am going to describe below. For this experiment you will need three volunteers, a hedonic rating scale chart-this will serve as the dependent variable, water, lemon juice, lime juice to serve as the habituation taste stimulus, coconut –vanilla flavoring to serve as dishabituating taste stimulus and a medicine dropper (Nakano, 2006).
You will carry out a set of two experiments. Beginning with one volunteer, ensure that they have not taken anything over the last two hours. Drip on the tongue 0. 03ml of lemon juice. Get the volunteer to rate how much they like the taste and then, to clear the tongue give them 2 trials of 0. 03 ml of water. This is to be done ten times and water has to be administered after every test to cleanse the tongue (Nakano, 2006). On trial 11 administer lime juice instead of lemon juice. Record how much the participant likes the flavoring.
On the final trial administer the same quantity of but this time use lemon juice and have the volunteer rate how much they like the flavor. From the above experiment create a chart with intensity rating on the y axis and the trials on the x axis. This is the data as Nakano (2006) says that you are going to use in making your conclusion. It should therefore be recorded with ultimate accuracy and precision. Close that experiment and move to experiment two. In the second experiment you will need two people where one will serve as the control.
The control helps the experiment get a point of testing the variables. Even in this experiment ensure that the participants have not taken anything two hours before the experiment. Though the experiments can be carried out separately it is preferred that you carry them out at the same time of the day (Nakano, 2006). Begin by administering 0. 03ml of lemon juice to the volunteers tongue and get them to rate on the scale how much they like the flavor. Follow this with two trials of water to cleanse the taste.
After that drip 0. 3 ml of coconut or vanilla on the volunteers tongue and have them mark on the scale how much they like it. Cleanse the taste ones again with two trials of water. For the control experiment Nakano (2006) says, administer to the volunteer for the 1-12 trials 0. 03 ml of lemon juice and have them record their liking for the flavor. But for the experimental volunteer it is 10 trials of lemon juice and an 11th one on coconut or vanilla flavors. On the 12th trial use lemon juice and having the participants rate their liking for the flavor at every trial (Nakano, 2006).
At the end create a chart with intensity rating on the y axis and trials on the x axis. The control -one with no dishabituator and the experimental-one with dishabituator should be labeled clearly (Nakano, 2006). From the findings of the experiment above provide a summary or analysis of comparison and contrast between the patterns observed on the rating on both experiments. These ratings should be translated in to numbers for graphs with the extremely disliked getting 1 and the extremely liked getting 10 on the hedonic scale.
