Step 1, Identifying the problem/opportunity: OPPORTUNITY: We have an opportunity because we are trying to find a suitable location to set up our farm so that we can start running our business.
PROBLEM: Singapore is a very small country, so our problem is that it is very hard to find suitable land to set up our farm resort. PROBLEM: It is hard to predict how much land we need to build our farm, which includes all the hotels and buildings/facilities. We might end up not having enough land to build all the things we want. PROBLEM: We might not have enough land for any expansion plans we might have, since land is so scarce in Singapore.
Step 2, Think up alternative solutions: Location 1: (2. 6km X 2km): Forested area next to Old Chua Chu Kang Road, next to KJE, behind Hai Inn Temple. Location 2: (3.
4km X 1. 7km): Forested area behind Nanyang Technological University. Location 3: (1. 4km X 1. 3km): Forested area between Kangkar River and Tengah River, near Tengah Air Base.
Location 4: Reclaim land for farming because of a lack of suitable land. Location 5: (630m X 520m): Eco Green at Tampines. Step 3, Evaluate alternatives and select a solution: We will need a big plot of land in order to set up our farm resort. Our farm resort will consist of open field farms, vertical farm buildings and accommodative buildings like chalets. In order to build all this, we have decided that it would be preferable to have at least 1.
5km X 1. 5km of land to start building up our business. Much of Singapore’s Central and East areas are occupied by nature reserves and reservoirs, so we can’t build our farm in those areas. Central and East parts of Singapore are also packed with tall buildings and residential areas, so building a farm in those areas is not an option. Here are the criterias for choosing our plot of land: The plot of land must be big enough for us to build all our buildings and facilities, and must also have enough extra space for any expansion plans we might have. It must be easily accessible to the public, so that people can easily come to our farm anytime they wish. Lastly, the plot of land should be situated be away from tall buildings and residential areas (city areas).
This will give our farm a feeling of being away from the city, making it the perfect getaway from city life. Location 1: It is a big plot of flat land, so it should give us enough space to build our business and expand it if we wish to. It is also very accessible because it is close to 2 highways (KJE and PIE) and next to Old Choa Chu Kang Road. The nearest LRT station (Keat Hong) and nearest MRT station (Bukit Gombak) are both about 1. 1km away, which is not very far away and also adds to the accessibility of the location.
It is also located away from the tall buildings and residential areas, making it a nice getaway from the city. Location 2: It is a very big plot of land, much bigger compared to Location 1, so it should give us enough space for our activities. However, it is located near NTU, so any expansion or building plans NTU might have would limit our space. It has some deforested areas, which means there is development going on there. So, we might not be able to lease the land from the government. Being located near NTU means it is near to the city areas.
Some of the nearby areas include cemeteries, Civil Defence Academy and National Shooting Centre, so it does not feel like a suitable place to be setting up a farm. Location 3: It is quite a small plot of land, but it is sandwiched between 2 rivers, so the soil there should be quite fertile and good for farming. However is quite inaccessible, because it is sandwiched in between 2 rivers with no roads nearby, unlike in Location 1 which is made very accessible by the presence of roads and highways. Also, it is close to Tengah Air Base, which is a highly protected and restricted area. So, the government might not even be willing to lease us land in the first place. Moreover, Tengah Air Base is undergoing expansion, where they will remove 80000 graves and six farms for their expansion plans. So, location 3 might become unavailable in the near future due to the air base’s expansion plans.
Location 4: In theory, this would allow us to have as much land as we want to do our business. However, it is a bit unrealistic as the government controls the reclamation of land, so we cannot ask the government to help us reclaim land. Even if we could, it would be super expensive to reclaim the land and we obviously won’t be able to afford it. Location 5: It is very accessible because it is right in the heart of Tampines town.
However, it is quite a small plot of flat land, so we might not have enough space to start building our business. Also, Eco Green is a nature park, which means it is protected land which cannot be built on. So, the government would most likely not lease the land to us. Also, it is located right in the middle of Tampines town area, so it would not really give the feel of a getaway from the city, unlike Location 1. After looking through the 5 possible locations, we have decided to use Location 1 as it fulfills all the 4 criterias for our plot of land. Step 4, Implement and evaluate the solution chosen: After setting up our farm at the chosen location, we will wait for about 6 months to determine if our chosen location is good for our business. If it does not turn out the way we want it to, we can move the business to a new location or give it some more time and evaluate it further.
