IS POPULARITY AN INDICATOR OF A GOOD MOVIEBy: Leeyafira Bt. Huzaizhar??? Final destination 4 in cinema, get your tickets now!??? Posters, colourful billboards with catchy phrases are used to promote the latest movies, a way in fishing for customers. Dear readers, A few days back, I went out for a movie with a few close friends. The movie however wasn??™t as good as the trailer which got me wondering; can a film be good even if it is not popular The quality of a movie does not depend fully on its popularity. We, as viewers had always been deceived by the true meaning of a good movie. This is due to the publicity, big promotion as well as famous starring actors and actresses in the movie.

Therefore, the quality of a film is not judged fairly. I personally believe that a film can be good although it is not popular. I, myself, have come across a movie entitled ??? Finding Forrester??™ which I think was a brilliant movie but sadly, it was not well-known.

Finding Forrester is a 2000 movie, written by Mike Rich and directed by Gus Van Sant, about a teenager, Jamal Wallace, played by Rob Brown, who is accepted into a prestigious private high school. He also befriends a reclusive writer, William Forrester, played by Sean Connery. Jamal Wallace is an inner-city kid from the Bronx who has an aptness at basketball and a genius at writing. Befriended by fellow student Claire and helped along by Pulitzer-prize winning author and recluse William Forrester, Jamal pursues his dreams both on and off the court while overcoming obstacles placed by his bitter literature teacher.

As Jamal is shaped by Forrester, he finds that he is changing the old writer as well, forcing him to confront his past and his future. However, this movie was not really the cup of tea for most teens today. My friends commented that they were not attracted to watch it because of the theme of the movie was not about love or romance which is the popular genre for most movies that have been hitting the box office today.

Apart from that, the plot of the story was too lengthy and dragging. For some, the issues that was brought up throughout the movie, for example the discrimination between the African American and the whites are something that they could not relate to. Overall, the movie carries a hidden message that is hard to be interpreted by the viewers.

Despite /On the contrary with their comments regarding the movie, I enjoyed watching it. What interests me about the movie was the message that had been conveyed. Finding Forrester is a great movie that interlace with the theme of the friendship regardless of the difference in race background. In this movie, a good bonding of friendship was portrayed between Williams Forrester , a reclusive author of a Pulitzer Prize winning book from the 1960s who was willing to befriend a young black in harnessing his writing skills. In this movie, Williams does not discriminate Jamal even though he is a black.

As time goes on, they learn from each other as they conquer something significant in their lives. The first act of friendship could be seen by the promise that were made by Jamal to William that no one was to know about their meetings and nothing written in the apartment was to be taken out. We could see Jamal living up to the promise. Even when his scholarship was on the verge of loss he did not compromised.

This is seen when Jamal was accused of breaching the text copyright which belonged to Forrester. Torn between defending his innocence and the trust by Forrester,,,,,, Jamal chose to remain in silence, respecting the friendship he has with Forrester. The strong bond of friendship is reflected again when Jamal tries to bring Forrester out of his apartment, something Forrester himself has not done in a long time. It is clear since the beginning of the story that Forrester is avoiding the public. He was thought to be dead or missing.

The reason for this was the sudden loss of his whole family. On top of that, he was offended by the harsh reviews on his only book that has been published. What is amazing about this situation is that, their strong friendship had change Forrester??™s point of view about the world. Jamal has made him realise that even when things have gone wrong, there??™s always ways to get back up and just move on.

Although Forrester was initially angry by Jamal??™s action but we could see Forrester living up to his friendship with Jamal by making an appearance in public to clear Jamal??™s good name. True friendship was portrayed up until the end. This movie has made me realise that no one had the right to stop you from achieving your dreams and when the dreams are destroyed all you need to do is get back up. There are so many things in life to appreciate and explore.

These values are the reasons that make this movie worth every minute of your time.
